If they're pregnant, they can be legally denied coverage. Women face other problems in today's insurance market: They tend to need more preventive care and therefore are subject to more co-pays and deductibles, and single heads of households are often women, meaning they're responsible for the family's healthcare bills. Legislation now being considered by Congress to overhaul America's healthcare system would dramatically change the rules, and there's general agreement that this is a problem that needs fixing.

A desperate shortage of female staff is threatening to undermine the legitimacy of the elections, which are the pinnacle of western-led efforts to build a peaceful democracy. Strict cultural norms mean women can’t vote in male-run stations. Women’s activists said the Independent Election Commission (IEC), which is organising the polls, still needs to recruit 13,000 women before Thursday’s elections.

Many of those women are former stay-at-home mothers, thrust back into jobs sooner than they had planned. Linda Stolberg is one of them. Until last November, Ms. Stolberg’s days were devoted to raising her two children and managing the family’s home in suburban Chicago. Her husband, Gary, works on a commission basis, selling time on local television to advertisers, and his earnings have dropped 20 percent this year from last. Bracing for further declines, Ms. Stolberg, a former human resources benefits manager, started looking for work. “I checked every job board, not even necessarily ones in my field, because I had been out of the work force for six years,” she said. “I applied at Trader Joe’s; I even pursued jobs with a funeral home and managing a doctor’s office. I wanted something flexible so we wouldn’t have to pay for child care.”

Afghanistan 'rape' law puts women's rights front and center

Koofi says that is exactly what happened when the Afghan parliament recently passed a bill intended to give the minority Shiite community their own identity. But critics say the latest draft strips Shiite women of rights as simple as leaving the house without permission from a male relative and as extreme as allowing a man to have sexual intercourse with his wife even when she says, "No." These critics wonder how what amounts to rape in marriage could be passed by parliament and signed into law by President Hamid Karzai. Amid blistering criticism from the West, Karzai addressed the law over the weekend, saying that key elements of the bill were misinterpreted by Western news organizations.

A common justification among Middle Eastern men for taking a second wife is that their first has not produced a son. Another reason is that first marriages are often arranged by families between cousins, without consent from either man or woman. A second wife can often be a “love match.” On other occasions widows, of which there are many in Afghanistan, are re-married to surviving brothers to keep the children in the family.
