In California, Hot and Dry Conditions Stir Drought Concerns

Wall Street Journal - By Stu Woo - Jan. 14 (News Analysis) - The past two days have felt like summer in California, as unseasonable warmth sweeps the state -- possibly presaging a third straight year of drought, a worrisome possibility for a state already hit hard by the economic downturn. Another dry year could mean water rationing for businesses and individuals. It could also slow business expansion and affect the agricultural industry, ski resorts and efforts to keep firefighting costs down, after a year in which state and federal officials spent $1 billion combating wildfires. Temperatures jumped to 90 degrees in parts of California on Monday and Tuesday. With no rain forecast for the next week, the state is on track for one of its driest Januarys ever, said state climatologist Michael Anderson.

Myriad wildfires pollute air, pose health risks and keep on spreading

San Francisco Chronicle - By Demian Bulwa - Jun. 27 (News Report) - San Francisco - Bay Area residents can expect to remain mired in a smoky haze this weekend as nearly 1,100 wildfires chew up 250 square miles of land around Northern California. For those most sensitive, the foul air could pose health risks, pollution regulators and meteorologists said Thursday. Temperatures are expected to top out in the 80s and even the 90s in hot spots like Livermore, which would make for great summer weather, "if only you could breathe," said Diana Henderson, a National Weather Service forecaster. Existing fires continued to spread Thursday, even as new fires were discovered. And state and federal fire officials said they were preparing for the return of the same dry thunderstorms that sparked most of the recent blazes. The storms were expected to bring lightning strikes starting late Thursday and continuing through the weekend. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District said it expects pollution levels to remain unhealthy today in portions of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties. People who are very young or old, or suffer from lung or heart disease, are most at risk. Of particular concern, said agency spokesman Aaron Richardson, are smoke particles smaller than 1/20th of the diameter of a human hair that are not filtered out of the body by the nose or throat, and may pass into the bloodstream. Concern about polluted air was one reason why organizers canceled Saturday's 100-mile Western States Endurance Run. The famous footrace from Squaw Valley to Auburn was scrapped for the first time in its 35-year history because of the "health risks that have been associated with these wildfires," race officials said in a statement.

Calif. firefighters wrestle with hundreds of blazes

Associated Press - Jun. 22 (News Report) - Lightning sparked more than 500 fires that burned around Northern California on Sunday as firefighters struggled with rough terrain and rising temperatures to keep the blazes from growing. A fast-spreading blaze miles from the heart of wine country surged overnight to scorch 5.5 square miles of grassy woodland by early Sunday, forcing residents of more than 60 homes to flee. The fire threatened more than 100 buildings as it burned in grassy woodlands straddling Napa County and Solano County about 40 miles southwest of Sacramento. The blaze was 10 percent contained Sunday morning and had destroyed one home, said Roger Archey, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Another fire burning west of Morgan Hill and Gilroy about 25 miles south of San Jose forced several residents from their homes Sunday, though officials did not have exact evacuation figures available. A lightning strike Saturday afternoon was being blamed for the blaze, which had burned nearly 2 square miles and was 10 percent contained. Meanwhile, firefighters worked against rising temperatures and falling humidity in the remote mountain forests blanketing the state's northernmost counties to keep hundreds of small blazes from expanding. "Our concern is how many of them are going to break out?" said Roy Del Carlo, a Cal Fire spokesman. Storms were responsible for as many as 75 fires in Shasta-Trinity National Forest, near Redding. Those fires ranged in size from less than an acre to more than 750 acres. None immediately threatened homes, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Another 90 fires ranging from one acre to 125 acres in size burning in the Mendocino County area alone, Cal Fire officials said. South of San Francisco, a fire that burned homes and sent thousands fleeing was expected to be fully surrounded by Sunday evening. Officials had expected full containment on Saturday, but hot weather and new fires kept fire crews in the area busy. So far, it had charred 630 acres, or less than a square mile, and destroyed ten homes along with ten other buildings.
