Washington Post - By Rachel Weiner - Feb. 14 (News Report) - In California, a federal appeals court struck down the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, declaring it unconstitutional. In New Jersey, the state Senate passed a bill to legalize gay marriage, two years after a similar measure went down in defeat. And on Monday Washington became the seventh state to legalize gay marriage when Gov. Chris Gregoire (D) signed it into law. Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) is pushing for gay marriage legislation, but he’s short a few votes and says the bill needs more Republican support.

"Our gay and lesbian families face the same hurdles as heterosexual families -- making ends meet, choosing what school to send their kids to, finding someone to grow old with, standing in front of friends and family and making a lifetime commitment," Gregoire said. "For all couples, a state marriage license is very important. It gives them the right to enter into a marriage contract in which their legal interests, and those of their children if any, are protected by well-established civil law."

seattlepi.com - By Trevor Griffey - Nov. 03 (News Analysis) - Looking at the election results, it seems to me that the majority of voters are neither left nor right, or perhaps they are both at once in ways that don't easily fit with either major political party's claims. Washington state voters have consistently voted for maintaining government services, but show caution to the point of hostility to creating new ones. At the same time, voters have consistently opposed paying taxes needed to maintain current levels of government services (other than special levies for education and public safety), but show caution to the point of hostility to cutting government spending when the resulting cuts are made known (as with I-745 and I-1033).
