That forecast held up for about 10 seconds. Trump, who continues to boast his presidential aspirations, was one of the dinner’s highest-profile attendees, but he also bore the brunt of the burns from both the night's two entertainers: President Barack Obama and "Saturday Night Live" head writer Seth Meyers. "Donald Trump is here tonight," said Obama. "Now, I know that he's taken some flak lately but no one is prouder to put this birth certificate matter to rest than The Donald. And that's because he can finally get back to focusing on the issues that matter, like, 'Did we fake the moon landing?' 'What really happened in Roswell?' And 'Where are Biggie and Tupac?'" But Obama was downright polite compared with Meyers, who zeroed in on The Donald. Trump "said he's running as a Republican," said Meyers. "Which is surprising: I just assumed he was running as a joke." It didn’t stop there. Trump "often appears on Fox," said Meyers, which is funny "because a fox often appears on Donald Trump’s head." The agreement, which would slash about $38 billion in spending this year, was announced separately by the president, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). "We have agreed to an historic amount of cuts for the remainder of this fiscal year, as well as a short-term bridge that will give us time to avoid a shutdown while we get that agreement through both houses and to the president," Reid said in a joint statement with Boehner. Obama hailed the deal as "the biggest annual spending cut in history," and Boehner said that over the next decade it would cut government spending by $500 billion.

SCHUMER: Well, we believe -- the vast majority of Democrats, overwhelming, believe that since Social Security doesn't contribute to the deficit, since Social Security will not contribute until 2037, that by including it in these specific negotiations it makes it harder to deal with what is the immediate and dangerous problem which is our immediate deficit over this year and the next several years. And, therefore, most of us think that Social Security should be kept for generations, and the way to do that is like what happened in 1983: Democrats and Republicans get together and come up with how we can extend Social Security.

On Friday, the White House announced that Jeremy Bernard, a California finance consultant for Obama's presidential campaign, has been named social secretary and special assistant to the president. Bernard, currently a senior adviser to the U.S. ambassador in Paris, previously worked as the White House liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities. He'll be the first male and the first openly gay White House social secretary and the third person to hold the post in the Obama White House. (He will replace Julianna Smoot who announced her departure in January. Desiree Rogers held the position first, but she resigned in the wake of a security breach when uninvited guests made their way into a state dinner in 2009.)
