Purcell said11,814 ballots were tabulated Saturday, including remaining early and provisional ballots. Proposition 203 passed with 841,346 votes, a percentage of 50.13 percent.

Dozens were arrested. A federal judge's decision a day earlier to block the strict law's most controversial elements didn't dampen the raging immigration debate. The judge has been threatened. Protesters rallied in cities from Los Angeles to New York. The sheriff of the state's most populous county vowed to continue targeting illegal immigrants. Lawmakers or candidates in as many as 18 states say they still want to push similar measures.

Judge mulls Arizona immigration law

The Politico - By Josh Gerstein - Jul. 23 (News Report) - A federal judge is considering taking a scalpel to Arizona’s new state immigration-enforcement law, carving out certain provisions of the controversial measure while allowing other parts of the legislation to take effect as scheduled next week. In back-to-back hearings Thursday, U.S. District Court Judge Susan Bolton seemed doubtful about at least three different aspects of the law, commonly known as S.B. 1070. She questioned Arizona’s lawyer about whether those parts of the law could pass Constitutional muster, and wondered whether allowing it to be implemented would “result in the arrest of tens of thousands of people” and their indefinite detention while awaiting the results of federal immigration checks.

Cooper - Apr. 24 (News) - Civil rights advocates vowed Saturday to challenge Arizona's tough new law targeting illegal immigration, saying it will lead to racial profiling of Hispanics despite the governor's assurance abuses won't be tolerated. Republican Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill that supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in Arizona, the nation's busiest gateway for human and drug smuggling from Mexico and home to an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants. The law requires police to question people about their immigration status — including asking for identification — if they suspect someone is in the country illegally. It's sparked fears among legal immigrants and U.S. citizens that they'll be hassled by police just because they look Hispanic.

Washington Post - Apr. 23 (Opinion) - It is nothing short of astonishing that Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer Friday signed a bill that could make it dangerous just to look Hispanic. That’s not the purpose of the new law, of course. As The Post reported, the law “requires authorities in Arizona to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are in the country illegally.” The Arizona Republic notes that it “would require anyone whom police suspect of being in the country illegally to produce ‘an alien registration document,’ such as a green card or other proof of citizenship, such as a passport or Arizona driver's license.”

My headline quote is from the UK’s Independent story, which notes: Australia, the driest inhabited continent on earth, is regarded as highly vulnerable. A study by the country’s blue-chip Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation identified its ecosystems as "potentially the most fragile" on earth in the face of the threat.

Man faces execution for being in car with killer

The Independent - By Leonard Doyle - Aug. 30 (News Report) - A 30-year old man, Kenneth Foster, is set to be executed today for a murder which he not only did not commit, but which the authorities in Texas accept was carried out by another man in 1996. The trial judge, the prosecutor, and the jury that sentenced Mr Foster to die admit that he did not murder the victim Michael LaHood. But, under a controversial "law of parties", in Texas an associate of a perpetrator can be found co-responsible in a capital case. The law imposes the death penalty on anybody involved in a crime where a murder occurred.

Permanent drought predicted for Southwest

The research suggests that the transformation may already be underway. Much of the region has been in a severe drought since 2000, which the study's analysis of computer climate models shows as the beginning of a long dry period.
