Even so, they were still locking down support Wednesday among a handful of holdouts, with the biggest bloc dissatisfied with the measure's handling of abortion.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.1 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Atlantic Monthly - By Megan McArdle - Nov. 05 (Comment) - Rural areas have a farmer's contempt for welfare, and the entire upstate region knows too well that the taxes and regulations imposed by the rich downstate voters are crippling their economy. No, this is not libertarian cant; it's obvious to basically anyone who spends any time there. New York has onerous business taxes, a deeply problematic workman's comp system, and various rules about public sector unions that are slowly destroying the budgets of the local cities. Combine this with a whole lot of cold weather, and there's no way they can attract new businesses to replace the big industrial plants they've lost.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Christie Unseats Corzine in New Jersey; Bloomberg Wins a Third Term as Mayor

New York Times - By Michael M. Grynbaum - Nov. 04 (News Report) - Christopher J. Christie, a Republican former United States attorney who said he would vanquish corruption from the halls of New Jersey government, won the New Jersey governor’s race on Tuesday, defeating the incumbent, Gov. Jon S. Corzine, and striking a blow against the Democratic party on a national stage.

Mr. Christie, who accused Mr. Corzine of leading the state into economic turmoil, had nearly half of the vote to Mr. Corzine’s 44 percent, with more than 80 percent of precincts reporting.

Mr. Christie’s victory ended a bruising and bitterly fought race that often descended into personal attacks by both candidates. Although the campaign focused mainly on local issues, including a statewide corruption scandal, Republicans across the country were quick to portray Mr. Christie’s win as a defeat for President Obama.

The White House invested heavily in the New Jersey contest, a tacit acknowledgment that a defeat for Mr. Corzine would be interpreted as a rebuke of Mr. Obama, potentially affecting the president’s ability to pass major legislation and the public’s perceptions of the Democratic influence.

Republicans already captured the night’s other major gubernatorial race in Virginia, where Robert F. McDonnell, a former state attorney general, defeated the Democratic candidate, R. Creigh Deeds, a stark reversal of fortune for Democrats who have held control in Richmond for the past eight years.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.6 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Atlantic Monthly - By Marc Ambinder - Nov. 03 (Opinion) - Along with tarot cards and goat entrails, a lot of people believe they can divine hidden meaning from the results of off-year elections, like the ones in Virginia, New York and New Jersey on Tuesday. I'm skeptical. For one thing, nobody bothers to wait for the polls to close anymore--the "meaning" of the results has been hammered out in advance. A GOP sweep will be taken as proof that conservatives are resurgent and President Obama's agenda is in trouble, while Democratic wins in New York and New Jersey--Virginia is hopeless--will demonstrate that conservatives have gone off the deep end. (Any other combination will mean a dull night for cable television.)
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Virginia: Bob McDonnell Campaign a GOP Model for Success

Time - By Jay Newton-Small - Nov. 03 (News Analysis) - For all the talk of Republican chaos and infighting in this off-year election, the GOP in Virginia seems to have found the formula for unifying its party and delivering a winning message. If the polls are accurate, McDonnell could walk off with a double-digit victory over Democratic nominee Creigh Deeds in Tuesday's election — this in a state that only a year ago was declared to be trending blue. And across the Potomac, Washington is paying attention. "The independent electorate in our state has indicated in a very strong way that they believe the vision that Bob McDonnell is out there promoting is one that satisfies what they're feeling right now," says Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 House Republican.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average - 4 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Consider. In 2001, Virginians elected Democrat Mark Warner. New Jerseyans elected Democrat Jim McGreevey. Warner won by a comfortable margin of five points, while McGreevey stomped his GOP opponent by nearly 15 points.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.2 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
