I think this journalist got it exactly right, and it's important to distingish between for pure racism and disageement on policy. I think those who are racist are 'bringing fuel to the fire' to the ultra-right conservatives such as Ann Coulter, who tries to be 'cute' and 'funny' about it. None of them are doing the conservatives or the Repuclican party a favor. But I think the President is wise not be distracted by it, because then what he wants to achieve as President will be secondary and race will be the 'only issue', that will feed talk shows and political cable shows.

The quality of empathy—which President Obama has said is a priority in a Supreme Court pick—has been derided, mocked, scorned, and brought into close contact with Michael Steele's behind. Which makes it rather problematic when you consider that conservatives have in fact been playing the empathy card a lot more effectively than progressives in recent years.
