No proposal to end taxes for seniors making less than $50,000

PolitiFact - By Angie Drobnic Holan - Apr. 16 (News Analysis) - President Obama's campaign pledge to end taxes for seniors making less than $50,000 has fallen off the radar. It wasn't part of the tax cuts in the economic stimulus bill, also known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It wasn't in Obama's first budget outline, which was approved by Congress on April 2, 2009. And it's not part of any proposed legislation that we can find. Today, on Tax Day, Obama gave a speech in which he talked about his other tax promises and how he wants to reshape the tax code to make it simple and more efficient. But he never mentioned his promise of curtailing the income tax for seniors. The Obama administration has done other things for seniors. Thanks to the stimulus bill, for example, everyone who gets Social Security benefits will receive a $250 check from the government in May. But the bold promise to end taxes for seniors if they make less than $50,000 seems to be forgotten.

However, one could be easily led to think he's considering it, watching America's Newsroom anchor Megyn Kelly seemingly audition for the angry host's traditional role as the network's screamer. Speaking with ACORN spokesman Scott Levenson on Thursday, Kelly began the 'discussion' with Levenson by claiming, "Scott, a lot of people, a lot of our viewers, think your group is corrupt, you've been found guilty of fraud in several states and they don't want you having anything to do with the census. What say you?" Levenson tries to respond and clearly state his points while Kelly continues to interrupt, and harass him. "The election was four months ago, Megyn, and not one person voted in the election that was not supposed to vote," Levenson said, but the Fox anchor never seemed to listen. He tried to explain that workers during the election were hired across the country for about $12 an hour, and that a handful of individuals -- not the ACORN organization -- were prosecuted for crimes "with ACORN cooperating with prosecutors in each case." It's like calling Fox News a bunch of thieves if an employee is picked up for larceny, he tried his best to point out.

Complicating matters is our own misdiagnosis. It is time for us to recognize that the electorate has changed. We cannot continue to think that the United States is a center-right nation. The 2008 election demonstrated that this is no longer true, at least in an electoral sense. Republicans held some form of power from 1995 to 2009. We can confidently say that the legacy of this era will be great policy achievements: lower taxes, a reformed welfare system, a more secure world and a more accountable educational system.

This Census Bureau region consists of two divisions: the Pacific West and the Mountain West. Pacific West The Pacific West is unique if for no other reason than two of its five states were the home states of Presidential candidates. Because of this, it is difficult to analyze these states' voting patterns. Given the state of McCain's Alaska polling before the Republican convention, it seems unlikely that he would have won the state by twenty points without Palin on the ticket. Similarly, Obama's ties to Hawaii probably added to his 40-point victory there. In other words, because of the personal nature of the vote in these small states, we just can't glean too much useful information from them.
