Here’s the narration: "The son of a single mom, proud father of two daughters, President Obama knows that women being paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men isn't just unfair, it hurts families. So the first law he signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act to help ensure that women are paid the same as men for doing the exact same work. Because President Obama knows that fairness for women means a stronger middle class for America." In this item, we're checking the claim that "women (are) paid 77 cents on the dollar for doing the same work as men." The 77 cent figure has become a rallying cry for those who seek to eliminate employment discrimination based on gender. And it’s a genuine statistic. In a report released in September 2011, the U.S. Census Bureau wrote that in 2010, the female-to-male earnings ratio of full-time, year-round workers was 0.77." Translated into dollars, that means that in 2010, women working full-time earned 77 cents for every dollar earned by men working full time.

Wall Street Journal - By Carrie Lukas - Apr. 13 (Opinion) - Recent studies have shown that the wage gap shrinks—or even reverses—when relevant factors are taken into account and comparisons are made between men and women in similar circumstances. In a 2010 study of single, childless urban workers between the ages of 22 and 30, the research firm Reach Advisors found that women earned an average of 8% more than their male counterparts. Given that women are outpacing men in educational attainment, and that our economy is increasingly geared toward knowledge-based jobs, it makes sense that women's earnings are going up compared to men's.

On Friday, the White House announced that Jeremy Bernard, a California finance consultant for Obama's presidential campaign, has been named social secretary and special assistant to the president. Bernard, currently a senior adviser to the U.S. ambassador in Paris, previously worked as the White House liaison to the National Endowment for the Humanities. He'll be the first male and the first openly gay White House social secretary and the third person to hold the post in the Obama White House. (He will replace Julianna Smoot who announced her departure in January. Desiree Rogers held the position first, but she resigned in the wake of a security breach when uninvited guests made their way into a state dinner in 2009.)
