New York Times - By Adam Liptak, Ethan Bronner - Jun. 25 (News Report) - Some 2,000 juvenile offenders serving life sentences without parole were given hope of eventual release by the Supreme Court on Monday. The court ruled that laws requiring youths convicted of murder to be sentenced to die in prison violate the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

Anjali Appadurai, a student at the College of the Atlantic in Maine, addressed the conference on behalf of youth delegates. Just after her speech, she led a mic check from the stage -- a move inspired by the Occupy Wall Street protests. "It always seems impossible until it's done," Appadurai said. feminist.org - Aug. 22 (News) - Twenty-one percent of President Obama's nominees are African Americans and nearly 50 percent are women. By contrast, only 7 percent of President George W. Bush's nominees were African American and 23 percent were women, and President Clinton's nominees were 16 percent African American and 29 percent women. President Obama has doubled the number of Asian Americans working as federal judges. Under Obama, the first Latina, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, was sworn into the Supreme Court.
