A million dollar revenue stream that requires only a salesperson or two, some web support and off-the-shelf e-commerce and newsletter tools? It caught my eye. And I&#8217;m suggesting you steal the idea for your local news operation fast before national competitors own the market.
The idea is Deal Brokering. You use your knowledge of the local scene, your brand and your contacts to negotiate group deals with local businesses from bars to restaurants to dry cleaners. The businesses offer big one-time discounts to attract new customers, your audience gets access to great deals, and you broker the deal on your site and get a substantial cut of the money. It&#8217;s already happening around the country.
Online startups like Groupon and Living Social offer one local deal a day, which is conveniently pushed to you through e-mail or cell phone.
Each deal is usually 50% off or more, good for just one day, and specific to your city. I&#8217;ve seen deals on organic food, massages, hair styling, dry cleaning, acupuncture, dental checkups, online book printing, gym memberships, belly dancing classes, and much more. Yet the most common deals, and probably the best sellers, are restaurant, bar and entertainment gift certificates. I have yet to see a deal repeated.
The beauty of the model is its simplicity. It is easy and fun to see one deal a day, presented with humor or sparkle. I dislike lists of deals provided by groups like Travelzoo.com or Restaurant.com that require combing through offers to see if any are relevant. And the new deal services make it easy to buy the day&#8217;s deal and share it with friends. Whatever the answers, the future of news ultimately rests on more long-term concerns: What are the prospects for alternative journalism organizations that are forming around the country? Will traditional media adapt and innovate amid continuing pressures to thin their ranks?

And with growing evidence that conventional advertising online will never sustain the industry, what progress is being made to find new revenue for financing the gathering and reporting of news?

The numbers for 2009 reveal just how urgent these questions are becoming. Newspapers, including online, saw ad revenue fall 26% during the year, which brings the total loss over the last three years to 43%.

Local television ad revenue fell 22% in 2009, triple the decline the year before. Radio also was off 22%. Magazine ad revenue dropped 17%, network TV 8% (and news alone probably more). Online ad revenue over all fell about 5%, and revenue to news sites most likely also fared much worse. 

Only cable news among the commercial news sectors did not suffer declining revenue last year.

The estimates for what happens after the economy rebounds vary and even then are only guesses. After a commenter persisted in posting &#8220;a vulgar expression for a part of a woman&#8217;s anatomy&#8221; on a &#8220;Talk of the Day&#8221; feature asking readers to name &#8220;the craziest thing you&#8217;ve ever eaten,&#8221; the editor, Kurt Greenbaum, observed that the comment originated from a local school&#8217;s IP address. Greenbaum called the school to inform them that somebody had been posting obscene comments from one of their computers. Shortly thereafter, officials at the school deduced that the comments had been posted by an adult employee. After being confronted with the evidence, the employee resigned.

Greenbaum told this story in a matter-of-fact Post-Dispatch blog post titled &#8220;Post a vulgar comment while you&#8217;re at work, lose your job.&#8221; The post, along with a follow-up, elicited over 600 responses from readers, overwhelmingly upset at the heavy-handed move and Greenbaum&#8217;s perceived smugness in defending it. (On his Twitter account, Greenbaum professed amazement &#8220;at the readers who comment in defense of a jackass who posted a vulgarity on our site &#8212; and lost his job.&#8221;)

He may well have expected praise for his actions. A jackass had posted a stupid comment.       <description>&lt;span&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://newstrust.net/sources/columbia_journalism_review?ref=rss&quot;&gt;Columbia Journalism Review&lt;/a&gt; - By Megan Garber - Mar. 06 (News Analysis) - In its inaugural State of the News Media report in 2004, the Project for Excellence in Journalism put its finger on a core paradox in contemporary American journalism: &#8220;Journalists believe they are working in the public interest and are trying to be fair and independent in that cause,&#8221; the report went. &#8220;This is their sense of professionalism.&#8221; The next line? &#8220;The public thinks these journalists are either lying or deluding themselves.&#8221; It continued: &#8220;Americans think journalists are sloppier, less professional, less moral, less caring, more biased, less honest about their mistakes, and generally more harmful to democracy than they did in the 1980s.&#8221;

It concluded: &#8220;After watching these numbers closely for years, we at the Project suggest that all of these matters&#8212;the questions about journalists&#8217; morality, caring about people, professionalism, accuracy, honesty about errors&#8212;distill into something larger. The problem is a disconnection between the public and the news media over motive.&#8221;
