In the Last Week, Numbers Make the News

Journalism.org - By Tom Rosenstiel - Nov. 04 (News Analysis) - The front page of the Washington Post Nov. 2 was dominated by a multi-colored graphic located below the headline, “McCain’s Challenge: An Uphill Climb to 270.” The chart—which calculated electoral map math—grouped states that were “solid” for Obama and McCain, states that were “leaning” toward either one and states that were “up for grabs.” The verdict: If Obama simply carries the states in which he is favored, he would end up with 291 electoral votes, 21 more than needed for victory. It was only one of many such maps in the last week. If there ever is a time when campaigns are horse races, it is in the final days, and coverage was indeed largely about the contest itself. In the week from Oct. 27-Nov. 2, the top storyline in the media, was coverage of the contest for crucial battleground states, filling 16% of the campaign newshole studied, according to the Campaign Coverage Index from the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism. The battle over swing states was also No.1 the previous week, but at a smaller 10% of the coverage. Yet the fight over Missouri, Ohio, and Florida is just the tip of the iceberg. When you add other strategic narratives—most notably, head-to-head polls (at 5%), candidate attacks (4%), ads, including Obama’s 30-minute “infomercial,” (3%) and electoral vote arithmetic (3%), attention to the horse race accounted for about one-third of last week’s campaign coverage. That’s up modestly over the previous week’s horse race coverage and a significant jump from that of the week of Oct. 13-19. And while the media were ever vigilant for signs of a tightening race, the overarching narrative was that Obama was the clear, and possibly even overwhelming, favorite to win.

What to Watch For - An hour-by-hour guide to election night

FiveThirtyEight - By Nate Silver - Nov. 03 (Poll) - In 2000 and 2004, the outcome of the presidential race was unknown into the wee hours of the morning (and indeed for several weeks thereafter in 2000). This time, it is possible that we will be able to guess the winner of the presidential race relatively early in the evening. Regardless, there will be plenty to watch Tuesday night, particularly for those who can appreciate a good slugfest in the Senate. And lest we count John McCain out, we need only remember the polling disasters that befell states like New Hampshire in this year's primaries. Here, then, is what I will be watching each hour on election night. 6 PM EST. Polls close in portions of Indiana and Kentucky. I continue to find a hair's worth of tightening on balance in the state-by-state polls -- even as Obama's position in the national trackers seems to be roughly as strong as it has ever been. This, ironically, is the exact reverse of the position we saw earlier in the week, when the national polls seemed to be tightening even as the state polls weren't. However, Obama's win percentage has ticked upward again for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he's gotten some relatively good numbers out of Pennsylvania since our last update, with PPP and Zogby giving him leads of 8 and 14 points, respectively, and Rasmussen showing his lead expanding to 6 points after having been at 4 before. (The Zogby poll is probably an outlier, but may serve to balance out outliers like Strategic Vision on the other side). Secondly, McCain's clock has simply run out. While there is arguable evidence of a small tightening, there is no evidence of a dramatic tightening of the sort he would need to make Tuesday night interesting.

John McCain (R-AZ) launched his presidential campaign emphasizing national security, an issue of top concern for many voters at the time. Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) kicked off his candidacy stressing opposition to the increasingly unpopular (PDF) war in Iraq. By the end of their contest, the issues of terrorism and Iraq had faded to distant echoes amid the din of the financial crisis. But national security, as well as a host of related foreign policy issues, will demand the attention of the forty-fourth president. The long campaign-shadowed by events from Pakistan to the Caucasus to the bursting of the global financial bubble-provided ample opportunity for McCain and Obama to present their sometimes contrasting worldviews. Iraq policy highlights the sharpest divide between the two. McCain, a strong advocate of the military surge, warned on the stump that Iraq could become a terrorist sanctuary if U.S. forces are withdrawn too soon. "If our troops are ordered to make a forced retreat, we risk all-out civil war, genocide, and a failed state in the heart of the Middle East," he said in a June 2008 speech. More generally, McCain cites radical Islamic extremists as the most significant threat facing the country, requiring "all elements of our national power" to confront.
