The Age of Paranoia

Psychology Today - By Stanton Peele - Nov. 09 (Opinion) - There is profound paranoia on the economic front all along the political spectrum. Conservatives AND liberals feel that bailouts are arranged for the benefit of Wall Street insiders by leaders of both parties who rely on former Goldman Sachs directors and people who have worked closely with them. At the same time many people are suspicious about the presence of immigrant and unfamiliar religious groups in our midst. For their parts, as demonstrated by Dr. Nidal Hasan, people in these groups are paranoid about the intentions of the rest of the country towards them. Thus, there is a reciprocal exchange between anti-immigrant paranoia and paranoid acting out by its targets. Of course, we are paranoid about the intentions of those overseas who wish to destroy the United States. But a remarkably large percentage of Muslims internationally support jihadists because they fear American intentions and believe that we hate them. Many Muslims believe that the American government itself launched the 9/11 attacks in order to justify wars against Muslim nations.

The quintessential “tough on crime” initiative, Proposition 6, was overwhelmingly rejected by voters across the state, a count of 70 percent to 30 percent, and did not win a majority in a single county. With little news coverage, and no commercials on either side leading up to the election, the trouncing of Prop. 6 was a near unadulterated reflection of California's new mind-set on criminal justice policies. The numbers point to a repudiation of “lock 'em all up” politics that has dominated the state for decades.

While John McCain and Barack Obama both supported last year's immigration bill, agreeing on amnesty and border security, they were pointedly at odds over whether U.S. policy should continue to prioritize family reunification above the admission of immigrants with economically desirable skills. Last year's bill would have introduced a point system, under which possession of valuable skills would have weighed heavily in a visa applicant's favor, overturning the strong bias of current law in favor of family members, including those beyond the immediate family.

Los Angeles Times - Oct. 17 (Editorial) - We have seen great progress -- no longer does any serious person question the promises of the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, which extended the rights to due process and "equal protection of the laws" to all inhabitants of all the states. Yet many of the social issues that divide us reflect a still-unrealized commitment to equality for all.John McCain and Barack Obama mostly hold opposing positions on such issues. For example, Obama would allow gays to serve in the military; McCain would not. Obama left the campaign trail to fly back to Washington and vote for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, legislation to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that restricted the rights of workers to sue for pay discrimination; McCain skipped the vote, saying that women would be better served by training and education than by expanded access to the courts. In this week's debate, McCain described the act as a "trial lawyer's dream." Still, there are some areas of agreement: Both candidates, regrettably, oppose gay marriage, and both, happily, support stem cell research.

freemanfreenation.org - By A Freeman - Oct. 14 (Editorial) - According to the U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 Congress is given power "To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes." This "commerce clause" means the first responsibility is for Congress to regulate trade with foreign nations, secondarily between the states and last of all with the native peoples. It seems the hardest restrictions were intended for foreigners, middling to the states and least to the native peoples of America. Under this commerce clause Congress has regulated the people of the states in everything from minimum wages, to validation and approval of drugs, food processing, to automobile standards, etc. Foreign nations such as China have it free and easy compared to U.S. manufacturers in that none of the "regulation" applies to them. . . . it would be only fair that foreigners doing business in the U.S.A. would be held to the same standards (if not greater) than those applied to residents of the U.S.A.
