The Nation - By Rebecca Solnit - Oct. 29 (Opinion) - Calling lies “lies” and theft “theft” and violence “violence,” loudly, clearly and consistently, until truth becomes more than a bump in the road, is a powerful aspect of political activism. Much of the work around human rights begins with accurately and aggressively reframing the status quo as an outrage, whether it’s misogyny or racism or poisoning the environment. What protects an outrage are disguises, circumlocutions, and euphemisms—“enhanced interrogation techniques” for torture, “collateral damage” for killing civilians, “the war on terror” for the war against you and me and our Bill of Rights.

I knew she was asking them for her five-year-old daughter. However, my sister-in-law instantly reacted, “Why would you need them? Those clothes do not fit your child.” Sadly, and almost in a crying mood, Seeta replied, “No, they fit my daughter perfectly.” To normalise the situation, I gave a hint to my sister-in-law not to argue with her.

In the wake of disasters like the catastrophic earthquake that struck Haiti, it can be comforting to see big international agencies taking charge of relief and reconstruction efforts. No doubt international agencies—with their resources, know-how, heavy machinery, and access to government—have a critical role to play. But large-scale relief operations are not always best suited to meet the needs of those who are made most vulnerable by disaster, namely, women and their children.

There are currently 250,000 internally displaced people due to the conflict. Adding to the violence, Afghanis find now find themselves in a battle with hunger. A new report from the humanitarian organization Oxfam says that one third of the population is now at risk from hunger and malnutrition.

Women Can End the Food Crisis

What many people don't realize is that spikes in food prices can plunge households in developing countries even deeper into extreme poverty. This is because they spend an average of 70 percent of their incomes on food, compared to the 15 to 18 percent that households in industrialized countries spend. Over the past nine months world food prices have increased by an astounding 55 percent. The cost of corn alone rose 87 percent in March. These are more than just statistics. The increase has had dramatic consequences for the billion people worldwide who live on less than 1 dollar a day: for many Central American families, for instance, the already meager breakfast of a corn tortilla is no longer an option. Even before the food crisis hit, the majority of the world's hungry - 7 out of 10 - were women and girls. Now they are at risk of becoming permanently malnourished, creating irreversible health problems for the next generation.
