At least a third of those killed were children, according to Gaza Health Ministry figures that the United Nations deems credible.

Irgun, together with the terrorist Stern gang, massacred 254 Palestinians in 1948 in the village of Deir Yassin. Tell me the moral difference between Irgun Zvai Leumi, the Stern gang and Hamas. I fail to see one.

Israelis Announce Cease-Fire In Gaza

Washington Post - By Craig Whitlock, Jonathan Finer - Jan. 18 (Breaking News) - Israel said Saturday that it would cease fighting in the Gaza Strip and pronounced victory in the devastating war that it launched 22 days ago. But fears persisted that the conflict could rekindle, as Hamas vowed to keep up its attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announced a cease-fire in Gaza, effective 2 a.m. local time Sunday (7 p.m. Saturday in Washington), saying Israel had achieved its aims. He said Israel had succeeded in dealing a harsh blow to Hamas, the Islamist movement that rules Gaza, that would make it think twice about resuming its practice of firing rockets into southern Israel.

The Independent - By Raymond Whitaker - Jan. 18 (News Report) - Israel was facing demands for war crimes investigations as it declared a unilateral ceasefire in Gaza last night after a 22-day assault in which more than 1,200 Palestinians, a third of them children, were killed and 13 Israelis died. Two children were killed yesterday when Israeli tanks shelled a UN school in which families were sheltering, leading a UN spokesman, Chris Gunness, to say: "There has to be an investigation to determine whether a war crime has been committed." The call was dismissed by an Israeli foreign ministry spokesman, Yigal Palmor, who said: "These claims of war crimes are not supported by the slightest piece of evidence." But among numerous allegations of disproportionate use of force, questions are also multiplying about the use of unconventional weapons by Israel, including a new type of bomb that causes injuries that doctors have not seen before, and which they find impossible to treat.

Israel Declares It Will Cease Fire; U.N. School Hit

New York Times - By Steven Erlanger - Jan. 18 (Breaking News) - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel announced late Saturday night that the Israeli military would begin a unilateral cease-fire in Gaza within hours while negotiations continued on how to stop the resupply of Hamas through smuggling from Egypt. Mr. Olmert, who said all Israeli objectives for the war had been reached, said Israel was responding positively to a call by President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt earlier in the day for an immediate cease-fire, in a clearly orchestrated move by two countries that both see the Hamas movement in Gaza as a threat. Meanwhile, Hamas leaders outside Gaza have insisted that the group will fight on, regardless of any Israeli declaration. The announcement came on a day in which Israel was again criticized by the United Nations over civilian deaths in Gaza — this time after a tank fired at a United Nations school, killing two young brothers taking shelter there.

Hamas Agrees to Temporary Cease-Fire Lasting 7 Days

Washington Post - By Craig Whitlock, Jonathan Finer - Jan. 18 (News Report) - Hamas and other Palestinian guerrillas said Sunday they would join a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, but warned that they would take up arms again if Israeli forces did not withdraw in seven days. Israel had announced late Saturday that it would stop fighting in Gaza, declaring that it had met its strategic objectives after launching the devastating war 22 days earlier. Hamas leaders had initially vowed to keep fighting until Israel pulled out, but changed their mind Sunday and said they would go along with the cease-fire.
