National NAACP urges opposition to Prop 8

dallasvoice.com - Feb. 24 (News Report) - In a letter to legislative leaders, NAACP national board chair Julian Bond and President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous urged lawmakers to pass House Resolution 5 and Senate Resolution 7 and put the legislature on record as calling for the courts to invalidate Prop 8 as an “improper and dangerous alteration of the California Constitution.”

Jealous said, “The NAACP’s mission is to help create a society where all Americans have equal protection and opportunity under the law. Our mission statement calls for the ‘equality of rights of all persons.’

“Prop. 8 strips same-sex couples of a fundamental freedom, as defined by the California State Supreme Court. In so doing, it poses a serious threat to all Americans,” Jealous continued. “Prop. 8 is a discriminatory, unprecedented change to the California Constitution that, if allowed to stand, would undermine the very purpose of a constitution and courts — assuring equal protection and opportunity for all and safeguarding minorities from the tyranny of the majority.”
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Huffington Post - By Lisa Leff - Dec. 29 (News Report) - Young gay people whose parents or guardians responded negatively when they revealed their sexual orientation were more likely to attempt suicide, experience severe depression and use drugs than those whose families accepted the news, according to a new study.

The way in which parents or guardians respond to a youth's sexual orientation profoundly influences the child's mental health as an adult, say researchers at San Francisco State University, whose findings appear in Monday's journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"Parents love their children and want the best for them," said lead researcher Caitlin Ryan, a social worker who directs the university's Family Acceptance Project. "Now that we have measured all these behaviors, we can see that some of them put youth at extremely high risk and others are wellness-promoting."
NewsTrust Rating: 3.4 average - 6 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

365Gay.com - May. 02 (News Report) - The number of gay men and lesbians turned way by military recruiters is unknown.

A study conducted last year for SLDN concluded that the U.S. military could attract as many as 41,000 new recruits if gays and lesbians in the military were able to be open about their sexual orientation.

Last month, Lawrence J. Korb, former Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Ronald Reagan, told a joint hearing of the House Armed Services Air and Land Forces Subcommittee and the House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee to "get rid of outmoded social restrictions," such as DADT.

"First, repeal the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' policy," Korb told the joint hearing.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

365Gay.com - May. 01 (News Report) - Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) is expected to sign legislation that would require school districts to prohibit bullying and harassment.

The Senate passed the bill unanimously on Wednesday. It already had passed the House.

Crist has said he would likely sign the bill. ''I'm against bullying, too,'' he said.

The legislation mandates that school districts throughout the state must put in place specific policies to deal with bullying that includes methods of investigating and punishments. It also bans cyber bullying.

The districts would have to comply by December 1 or risk losing state funds.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Larry Craig's guilty plea. They say they had sex with Craig or that he made a sexual advance or that he paid them unusual attention.

They are telling their stories now because they are offended by Craig's denials, including his famous statement, "I am not gay, I never have been gay." Those words, spoken on live national TV on Aug. 28, are now memorialized on a just-released-for-Christmas Talking Senator Larry Craig Action Figure.
NewsTrust Rating: 2.9 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Reverend Mel White remembers Jerry Falwell

The Advocate - By Rev. Mel White, Michelle Garcia - May. 17 (Special Report) - I was in the dentist's chair when I heard that Jerry Falwell passed away. I couldn't believe that I started crying. I had to find an office and I just cried. I was trying to think, "Why the heck am I crying?" I think I was crying for his family. He was a great father and husband, and he was a really good pastor - I've been going to his church for years, so I know -- and he was a really good president of a university. There are 20,000 students at Liberty University, which Falwell founded, and they all like him.
I knew there would be just a huge hole in Virginia and in Lynchburg, and I felt for those people. But at the same time I was feeling more strongly that now we'll never have a chance for Jerry Falwell to say, "I was wrong. I did wrong, and I said wrong, and I'm sorry. God creates gay people and loves them just like she created them. I'm not going to say anything more against gay people because I was wrong."
Imagine the consequence that would have had for so many people. Falwell was the face of homophobia.
Back when I was still afraid that I was sick and sinful for being gay, I got a job as a ghostwriter to get my kids through college. First I ghostwrote for Billy Graham, and the next thing you know, Jerry Falwell heard, and I ended up ghostwriting his autobiography. When you have to write 450 pages about a guy, you get really intimate with him, and I learned about this guy inside and out. I kind of liked him. I didn't like what he said, but he had a private persona that was really quite amiable.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Knight said to Ellen DeGeneres on her show January 17, his voice quavering a bit. He didn't want to be there. He seemed to want to grab hold of Ellen, to shift attention to her very public and, at the time, difficult coming-out a decade ago. Because Knight never wanted to be the poster boy for the word "faggot."

Who would? The word is tinged with the inchoate stupidity of adolescence. Most of us have probably not heard it since then, except maybe from the mouth of a passing heckler. It's certainly not for polite conversation. And, in fact, "I had never been called that to my face," Knight told DeGeneres. It was the only interview his publicist said he would do--he and Ellen share a publicity firm--on the subject of his Grey's Anatomy costar Isaiah Washington referring to him as "a faggot" on the set back in October. (Knight declined to speak for this piece.) The event hit the gossip press; soon enough it compelled T.R.--cute, lovable T.R., as he's regarded by many of the ABC medical drama's millions of fans--to come out.

By the time of the Golden Globes on January 15, things had settled down a bit. And then Washington, essentially without provocation, leaned into the microphone during a cast interview backstage and said, "No, I did not call T.R. a faggot. Never happened. Never happened." And what had been a dying controversy until then suddenly blew up into a major Hollywood scandal, with Washington sent to "counseling" by angry network suits, his job reportedly on the line, and cast members like Katherine Heigl incensed, worried that T.R. might leave the show over the unrelenting drama (as some media outlets speculated).

"I'm going to be really honest right now--he needs to just not speak in public. Period," the actress told Access Hollywood about Washington's impromptu utterance. "T.R. is my best friend," she added. "I will use every ounce of energy I have to take you down if you hurt his feelings." And thus crumbled, once and for all, the utopian vision of harmonious diversity that Grey's Anatomy broadcasts each week, betrayed by off-camera antics of a very real sort.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.9 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
