New Yorker - By Lauren Collins - Oct. 07 (Special Report) - Although Huffington was known as a conservative for most of her life, the Huffington Post is a kind of liberal foil to the Drudge Report. According to Nielsen Online, in February it drew 3.7 million unique visitors, surpassing Drudge for the first time. Its advertisers have included Starbucks, Volkswagen, Home Depot, and the Times. In August, the site logged 5.1 million unique visitors. This election season, both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama—whom Huffington supported over Clinton, in part because of his opposition to the war in Iraq—attempted to harness the voting power of its impassioned readership, with Clinton contributing posts about child poverty and the Bush Administration’s threats to reproductive rights, and Obama justifying his position on the FISA bill and clarifying his relationship to the Reverend Jeremiah Wright.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average - 5 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Heart to McCain/Palin: Back off on 'Barracuda'

Boston Globe - By David Beard - Sep. 05 (News Report) - Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.1 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Martin Luther King Jr., some say his legacy is being frozen in a moment in time that ignores the full complexity of the man and his message.

"Everyone knows -- even the smallest kid knows about Martin Luther King -- can say his most famous moment was that 'I have a dream' speech," said Henry Louis Taylor Jr., professor of urban and regional planning at the University of Buffalo. "No one can go further than one sentence. All we know is that this guy had a dream.
Editor & Publisher - Dec. 01 (News Report) - SAVANNAH Talk show host Montel Williams has apologized for an angry confrontation with reporters who said he threatened them.

Williams -- in Savannah to promote a program giving free prescriptions to low-income people -- became upset with a reporter's question Friday and terminated an interview.

When the Savannah Morning-News reporters later returned to the hotel for an unrelated assignment, he approached one of them -- high school student Courtney Scott, an intern at the newspaper.

"As we were preparing to film, Montel walked up with his bodyguard and got in Courtney Scott's face pointing his finger telling her 'Don't look at me like that. Do you know who I am? I'm a big star, and I can look you up, find where you live and blow you up,'" said Joseph Cosey, a web content producer for the newspaper. "At this time he was randomly pointing at all of us."
NewsTrust Rating: 3.8 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Getting the goods on green celebs

Los Angeles Times - By Gina Piccalo - Sep. 02 (News Report) - No, it's not easy being green, least of all for Hollywood A-listers living in jaw-dropping decadence. Solar panels on a 50,000-square-foot manse in Malibu just don't scream "Live simply!" Ditto hopping onto a private plane to get to the Live Earth concert.

Of course, celebrities don't let their lavish lifestyles stop them from preaching to the rest of us about temperance. Eco-friendly living isn't about great sacrifice, they contend, it's about making small but powerful changes. It's about voting green. It's about buying green. Besides, they say, they're doing their part by using their fame to broadcast a pro-Earth message that reaches millions of people. Isn't that enough?
NewsTrust Rating: 3.3 average - 3 Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The questions have loomed large over the Los Angeles County justice system for years as judges watched in frustration as the sheriff slashed the sentences they handed down, often by 90%, to alleviate chronic overcrowding in his jails.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.5 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Vogue - By Clay Risen - Apr. 24 (Special Report) - ebruary 26, 2007, was a beautiful late-summer day along the Gold Coast, a booming tourist mecca just south of Brisbane on Australia's eastern shore. But for the corporate executives attending the VeryGC Global Business Insights conference, the real attraction was in the cavernous main banquet hall of the Gold Coast Convention Centre: Alan Greenspan.
Or rather, Greenspan's disembodied, two-dimensional head. Appearing by video simultaneously for conference hall audiences in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Singapore, the former Federal Reserve chairman conducted an hour-long Q & A gabfest moderated by Nik Gowing, lead anchor for BBC World. It was during this session that Greenspan muttered the words now seared into the brains of financiers worldwide--"By the end of the year, there is a possibility, but not a probability, of the U.S. moving into a recession"--that triggered the subsequent global market plunge and cost the Dow 416 points in one day.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

But in the past week, strange things have happened. A senior Chinese official, Zhai Jun, traveled to Sudan to push the Sudanese government to accept a United Nations peacekeeping force....
So what gives? Credit goes to Hollywood -- Mia Farrow and Steven Spielberg in particular.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.4 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

USA Today - By Barbara Hagenbaugh - Mar. 20 (Special Report) - He has taken little vacation time, and his golf clubs are gathering dust. Instead, he's spending long days at his Washington-based consulting firm, which he started days after leaving the Fed in January 2006. Investors are still hanging onto his every word, as they did in his 18½ years as Fed chief. The fact that, during an appearance in February, he wouldn't completely rule out a recession later this year was partly blamed for a stock market plunge around the globe, including the sharpest U.S. stock sell-off since the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
