FactCheck: Firefighters vs. Giuliani

The union representing New York City firefighters is running a misleading video blaming former Mayor Rudy Giuliani for the deaths of more than 100 firefighters at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

We agree that Giuliani bears some responsibility for the widely documented failings of the fire department's radio communications on 9/11. It is true that the effective functioning of the fire department is a major responsibility of any ... Full Story »

It is good to fact check, but this reminds me of a fact checker in the 2004 election criticising Edwards for saying that the Iraq war would cost over $200 billion. This "fact check" gets some things very wrong. For example, it seems to blame the height of the buildings for the failure of the radios, "indeed, some radios did not pick up transmissions because they just didn't work very well in a high-rise building." well, isn't that the precise problem? Where do these fact checkers live, in some suburb full of two-storey homes? THe FDNY MUST have radios that "work very well in a high-rise building" something that was a clear conclusion from the first WTC bombing. Giuliani certainly should be criticized because, after all, the major claim on which he is running for President is how wonderful he would be at protecting us against terrorists, and, here is evidence he failed to fix a major communication problem among NY's first responders. In addition, this article makes the amazing claim that "he video ignores the extraordinary efforts to locate remains of the dead that continued for months after the September 11 attack" as if it was ended when all concluded the search had been effective and there were no more remains to be found. However, when Giuliani ordered recovery operations to stop, and paved over areas, it was predicted that in future construction some of these areas would be found to contain remains, and sure enough a few years later a large quantity of remains were found. The "fact checkers" seem unaware of this 2006 story. See e.g.: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2596219 Further, the comparison with the Swift Boat attack is unwarranted because nothing in the Swift Boat attacks turned out to be true. The fact checker, while criticizing the Firefighters' ads, agrees that at least some is very true. Also, it is good to point out a "bias" from the union, but it would be relevant to consider the possibility that the union is "biased" to Democrats because Republicans are not very good at addressing the concerns of the firefighters.
