Rep. Allen West, a Florida Republican, was recently captured on video asserting that there are “78 to 81” Democrats in Congress who are members of the Communist Party. Two scholars from Brookings and American Enterprise Institute speak out thoughtfully against political extremism. What makes this opinion particularly significant is that the authors are both to the right and left of the political spectrum, and have come to a shared conclusion that the GOP is primarily responsible for our political gridlock. After reporting on U.S. politics from a neutral perspective for over 40 years, they felt compelled to come out and identify the main source of the problem.
