Insightful essay by Danah Boyd on how social media tend to magnify the attention economy and the culture of fear. Well thought-out blog post, which cites extensive factual evidence as well as authoritative studies to suggest that our deepest fears get exacerbated online, not just by big media, but by people we know. I support her call to curb fear mongering by changing our cultural practices.
