Shadid died of an apparent asthma attack on Thursday while covering the conflict in Syria. A poignant tribute to one of the very best journalists in our current time based upon his implicit value of the views of ordinary people upon the power shifts and abuses of our era.

The tribute is given in the major form of a past interview with Shadid that reveals his persona and motivation.

The fact that Shadid was fluent in Arabic set him apart from most other correspondents in the MidEast. He was better able to relate what people were thinking and his own perceptive analysis based on his observations added an invaluable dimension to his reporting.

I actually don’t like covering conflict. I think you have to cover conflict when it’s part of what you do cover. And I do cover the Arab world. More »
