Pakistan's South Waziristan puzzle

What is Pakistan's government up to in South Waziristan?

Since the middle of May, the army has been conducting a military offensive against Pakistan's Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud - whose hideout lies in the mountainous terrain there.

But unlike the recent operation in the Swat valley, it says it has refrained from going all out against the militants so far.

There's not enough in this story that is concrete. I gain nothing by reading about rumors of a letter, an arrest. Where are the perspectives that say outright that the army has been too soft on the Taliban?

Although, the government strongly rejects any such suggestion, every previous operation against the Taliban has ended in a peace deal. More »

A little heavy on the military tactics, but interesting to read. Prime example for how the Pakistan military is reacting to the Taliban.

Essentially a 'he said, she said' story. The reporter doesn't leverage the BBC brand and resources to get some external confirmation or analysis, from US diplomats or academics, for instance.
