Michele Bachmann says HPV vaccine can cause mental retardation

After criticizing Texas Gov. Rick Perry for mandating a vaccine for school girls, Rep. Michele Bachmann added some scary charges: She claimed to have just met a woman whose daughter suffered mental retardation from the vaccine, that it has "very dangerous consequences" and that it puts "little children's lives at risk." The story is well pursued and reported. The only aspect not included is the possibility of drug corporations exerting influence upon the scientific studies, but one expects that a truly bad number of side effects would transcend that potential influence.

When an ethics-free candidate wants to be in the press, they can quote a one in a million undocumented claim from a anonymous lunatic on the street and get reported in all the mainstream news media with scant critique. Bachman: strong and wrong. It is peculiar that this bird brain is posing as a champion against mental retardation.
