I'm not quite sure what the Hell I just read, but if it's possible to manipulate light without electrical or any other conversions, transmitting information encased in light will be tremendously faster and cheaper.
Surely each generation must have had the same "gee-whiz!" or "what the Hell?" as us when confronted with unknown new technology.
Reports on basic research are normally good news, it does take years for it to make it to the application stage. For every 100 breakthroughs promised by research maybe one will bear fruit, but that does not deminish the value.
