This represents the "good digging" that reporters and editors should be doing. This is a story that could not have been done without sources who had been carefully cultivated and nurtured, and who probably spoke with no little sense of trepidation about their future should anyone reveal their cooperation with the Times.

Would it have killed them to rebut Bush's claim that torture is safe by mentioning that people have indeed died in both Iraq and Afghanistan because Americans working for the CIA tortured them to death?
