This story comes really close to presenting a complete description of the pros and cons of a solar powered house and car using hydrogen as the storage mechanism. Good balance, and well presented with just the right level of detail for the average person.

Great! Sure it is expensive to live off the grid right now. But if serious developments are invested in, this could be a new industry. I for one would definitely consider taking out a long term loan or additional mortgage costs if the upside to home ownership included energy independence.

The reporter on this obviously comes into the piece making a glaring assumption about hydrogen and then does not question basic aspects of the story or show his own independent research. Hydrogen is merely a replacement for batteries, it is an energy storage system, not an energy source. With an efficiency of only 50% going in to the storage tanks it is already far less efficient than batteries. Also, hydrogen atoms are so small that they will tend to pass through the skin of propane ... More »
