The CIA leak trial turned a spotlight on the shifting ground rules for reporters and their editors who more than ever must balance their pursuit of the news with a heightened risk of landing in court.

Eve Burton, general counsel of the Hearst Corp., which owns the San Francisco Chronicle and other papers, said editors have had to abandon at least three stories involving government activity in recent months because of a more hostile legal environment. More »

Notes: This self indulgent AP report misses the big media story in the Libby affair: 1. It appears Libby et al assumed reporters would not reveal their sources, hence the bold face lie, and if Fitzgerald had failed to go after the reporters he would have reinforced that perceived window for spin in the political system leading to more lies from government officials and 2. the Bush Administration had a windfall from this process, i.e., Libby's indictment was delayed for a very crucial year ...
