I will confess my bias towards being a fan of Chalmers Johnson, and recommend most of his writing. He is asking questions that many won't. One of the questions that grunts in the military would like to ask is, with so many troops on so many bases, how come the same combat units have to keep going back to the sand box of Iran, or the mountains of Afghanistan, or both, so many times, while the rear echelon in the military itself seems to go on happily, without breaking a sweat. Historical context is interesting and accurate. This book excerpt is loaded with information, but the footnotes/endnotes giving sources are omitted, and evidence is sparse. Doesn't really support the empire claim fully, but gets maybe half way there.
