Dick Cheney's Dangerous Son-in-Law

Washington Monthly - Feb. 19, 2007 (Special Report)
Philip Perry and the politics of chemical security.
In March 2003, when the world's attention was focused on U.S. soldiers heading to Baghdad, twelve senior officials in the Bush administration gathered around a long oak conference table in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, part of the White House complex. They were meeting to put the final touches on a proposed legislative package that would address what was perhaps the most dangerous vulnerability the country faced after 9/11: unprotected chemical ... Notes: I found the obvious left leaning bias of this article off putting (and I'm a liberal). There was no apparent rebuttal opportunity offered to those indicted by this piece - and it appears the reader is expected to anticipate this. I am very concerned about the gutting of environmental regulation and have intimately involved on the industry side as a commercial lender. This is an important story that will likely be discounted by many who read it as too biased to be reliable.

Notes: This is a one-sided story that has the ring of truth.

Notes: An excellent expose of how things get done by stealth and back-room dealing between well-connected--but unelected officials. The best line is at the end when Levine quotes Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) as saying, “In order to please their cronies in the chemical industry, the Bush administration is willing to put the health and safety of millions of people at risk.” Sort of says it all doesn't it?

Notes: This story gives alot of pertinent facts and background information. Does anyone else feel the irony of this man being described as a "family man?" Does anyone else think Perry and Cheney and others like them show a real disconnect between showing loyalty to the money stockpiled by their blood-tie families, while intentionally betraying the trust of the rest of the family of humanity? Withholding support for developing "Inherently Safer Technologies" for chemical plants because it ... More »

Notes: It's good to see such investigative exposés of nefarious Washington players in a Britney-Brangelina world.

Notes: Another "its about time" story - on a subject that has been too little discussed. Excellent background material and a sense of the many players in this potentially deadly saga.
