Walter Reed couldn't handle wounded from Iraq, leader says

Los Angeles Times - by Peter Spiegel - Feb. 18, 2007 (News Report)
The staff responsible for monitoring injured soldiers was overwhelmed, he says in response to a newspaper story.
The head of the Army hospital responsible for most of the seriously injured war veterans has acknowledged that the staff responsible for tracking patients after they receive treatment was overwhelmed by the number of wounded when violence spiked in Iraq two years ago.

The undermanned staff may have led to wounded veterans falling through the bureaucratic and medical cracks, he said.

Notes: This is a good, immediate, follow-up to a story breaking on the other side of the country. Given the time to react, and the weekend, the writer and the paper deserve kudos. The overall story is important, given the current popular climate: Is the Bush administration doing right by its troopers, here and abroad.

Notes: This is a straight forward news report on the head of Walter Reed's response to a critical Washington Post investigative report about to be published. There is not a lot of digging here but the story is factual and gives an overview of the findings and the response.

Notes: This report gives very little info.....or quotes or stats or dates. What are the actual staffing challenges. How much dough is provided for Vet care. Where is aftercare better? So many questions not asked. Spiegel seems for be reaching for a gotcha moment. It may be there, this report doesn't show it.

Notes: This is an urgently important story dealing with a disgraceful situation. The media should publicize this administration's true lack of support for our wounded heroes. Whenever the president talks about how she supports our troops and spares no expense for the safety and well-being, this report and others like it should be put in front of his face.
