Replace state property tax with carbon tax for climate action
One sign of progress comes from right next door. Voters in British Columbia recently re-elected Premier Gordon Campbell, the driving force behind BC's carbon tax. By 2012, the tax will reach about $30 per ton of carbon dioxide, or about 30 cents per gallon of gasoline. Reducing the regressive sales tax in order to impose a carbon tax would be more socially responsible. A carbon tax is much simpler and harder to evade than the dicey cap and trade solution being hyped at the federal level.
