David Rohde, Times Reporter, Escapes Taliban After 7 Months

David Rohde, a New York Times reporter who was kidnapped by the Taliban, escaped Friday night and made his way to freedom after more than seven months of captivity in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Mr. Rohde, along with a local reporter, Tahir Ludin, and their driver, Asadullah Mangal, was abducted outside Kabul, Afghanistan, on Nov. 10 while he was researching a book.

This is a terrific story, I just would like to know more. I find it hard to believe that the Taliban would leave hostages unguarded to the extent that they could literally escape by jumping over a wall. Also, the length of Rohde's captivity is odd--the article mentions the CBC's reporter that was kidnapped was released within a month after the Afghani government applied pressure on the Taliban.
