the admission of Ukraine is not in the interests of Russia, the United States, or, surprisingly, even the Ukraine. Along with the U.S. grab for influence over Caspian Sea oil and gas pipelines and the proposed installation of missile defense facilities in Poland and the Czech Republic, the admission of the Ukraine would naturally make Russia feel encircled.

Ukraine and Georgia both should not be admitted to Nato and both should not be admitted into the EU. Ukraine can enjoy good relations with Russia and with the EU, staying outside Nato and the EU. Many of those in the US who push hard for the admission of Ukraine into Nato also want Israel admitted, which would destroy the alliance and endanger the peace of the world.
