A well reasoned attack on military spending, but it is no better done than the right wing attacks on social spending. DoD budgets are one of the most convoluted and misleading items in the goverment. We built the interstate highway system as a national defense network, at one time we funded nearly 50 % of all R&D at universities with DoD dollars, we did much of the R&D for NASA with DoD dollars, and we established and maintain the GPS system with DoD dollars. That is not ot say that there are not areas that can't be phased down, but it will take a philosofical change before any real difference can be seen. Since WWII there has been a cry (seldom heard except in tight times) to reduce the US overseas footprint and requiring those nations where we provide a part of their defense aheild to pay for that protection.
