Under the harsh fluorescent lights of a squat, lackluster building in the Bronx, three mothers recently converged on a slab of tile to wait their turn for a bed and a roof. One had worked on and off until the bills caught up to her. Another prayed to God late at night for an apartment of her own, a crisp high school diploma and a job in computers.
