We have trashed our universities, turning them into vocational factories that produce corporate drones and chase after defense-related grants and funding. The column does a good job in a short space of looking at the ethics and philosophy of what the role of education is in a democracy, and how that role has been corrupted.

If we do not consider what is wrong with education, we may "fix" the wrong things and never improve.
