A dry, detailed story on student loan reform that's highly informative, but not the most engaging read. An anecdote up top and a better triage of data would have helped move it along. Washington Independent presents it as commentary, but this is essentially a report.

The story goes into some depth in defining the difficulties of student loan programs, and the politics involved in changing them. It lacks much history on how college costs got to be funded from loans rather than grants or scholarships. And the statistics could be better broken down - a median figure would have been useful rather than the average, or the amount of debt medical students or other professionals have when they come out of training
