Film Spotlights Need for Reform in War on Drugs

the Byrne grant program is designed to help states and local jurisdictions fight drugs and the violent crime associated with drug trafficking. The program provides federal money in 29 specific "purpose areas," including crime-victim assistance and alternatives to incarceration for nonviolent offenders, but most of the grants are intended for police activity. And a good deal of the money disbursed is predicated on the number, not the quality, of drug arrests. Full Story »

For what is essentially a piece of advocacy, this is very well reported and backed by reasonable evidence. But I knock it for fairness because it doesn't pursue input from law enforcement officials involved in the cases.

This piece covers an important subject, but the inclusion of the film trailer, along with the language and orientation of the writing, left me feeling it was not an even-handed perspective on this topic.

This is a must-read. It looks like a movie review of American Violet, but it's really a review of the federal program, just renewed by President Obama, that is the cause of so many bad things in the Drug War. False arrests, police departments profiting from property seizures, this article has them all. This is great stuff...
