This is a well written and important article. It points out clearly how delicate and difficult the issues are in Pakistan. Perhaps a better book to read to learn about the tribal areas is "Three Cups of Tea". A broad approach that looks well past military ideas should be consider.

Informative behind-the-scenes report on Richard Holbrooke, the new American special representative for Pakistan and Afghanistan. The reporter follows him in a series meetings with people from tribal areas, as well as U.S. and Pakistani military commanders. Factual, enterprising and very insightful.
