(Blog Post) The Pentagon did not mince words in dismissing as “absolutely absurd” and “comical” media reports from Indian news outlets that the US Navy was sending 34 warships off the coast of Mumbai as part of the security preparations for President Obama’s upcoming trip to India. Full Story »

This article provides adequate coverage of the press conference, but it fails almost entirely to go beyond what the spokesman was not allowed to say and provide the readers with the full story.

Factual report on the costs of President Obama's recent trip to India. While this brief article generally appears fair and relevant, it mostly cites public statements from government officials, and doesn't dig much past them, besides a quick estimation of the number of ships in the Army. I'm left wanting more depth and context about this whole incident -- or at least links to other sources that provide better coverage.

While it is to be expected that DOD will be closed mouthed regarding presidential security, it is the responsibility and the job of the press to get accurate information. This article completely fails to do that. While there is denial regarding both the number of ships deployed for the mission, and the reported cost incurred each day, there is no answer given which even suggests a framework by which these questions can be answered. Certainly, presidential security is a foremost consideration. At the same time it is hard to see how providing some general idea of costs and ship deployment could possibly endanger any component of this operation. It is for those reasons, that I find this to be a very disappointing article.

  • Why President Obama is right about India

The president's trip -- coconuts and all -- was worth every penny. Much grousing about the expense of President Obama's India trip. This is silly and vindictive. The one ...
