There is now, as consultants say, a result: the return of Iftikhar Chaudhry as Chief Justice. There was no other way through this stand-off. If Zardari broke his promise to reinstate the judges sacked by Musharraf as he tried to defend his claim to the presidency, he would go the same way as Musharraf. As he may yet do. Chaudhry, a clever man, as well as politically astute, is not likely to risk his hand by immediately challenging the legality of Zardari’s escape from corruption charges. But he could well do so, if Zardari’s support collapses further.
