Approaching the Whites-Only Bench

For state court watchers, last month provided a rare and historic moment to savor: A black governor was tasked with replacing the most powerful judge in the state, who happened to be a woman. Another small chance to make history, perhaps? Full Story »

A reasonable opinion that argues that courtrooms lacking in racial diversity may also lack credibility in fairly resolving conflicts. The call is for a "systematic approach" to diversifying courtrooms to reflect their constituencies.

The author does a good job of explaining the lack of State Judges and what should be done to rectify the situation. While I do not know the pay grade of Judges, I doubt money is really an issue. It looks like the membership in whites-only golf courses.

In a sober, analytic tone, this piece describes the lack of diversity among American judges. It's an important issue, and handled responsibly in this piece.

This is a good story about lack of diversity on the bench and in the pool of possible Judges. This is an important issue now and in the future.

With the election of an African American President, maybe more minorities will put their names in for judges. Certainly over time there will be more changes.

The article is rather lukewarm, poorly researched and provides almost nothing new on the topic of diversity in the courts. Very little new information and a dearth of experts cited. A light read, it could have said much more had it been more focused or longer. The article didn't mention very few Black Americans enter law. Only .05% of all Master's Degrees earned by Black Americans are in the field, while 30+% are in Education.

The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education point out that educational attainment alone will and has changed these statistics. For example today ... More »

An interesting article about the general lack of diversity regarding judges. It provides a little insight on the issue, and makes a few suggestions on how to increase diversity. While these points make for an interesting debate, the article could have benefitted from further exploration and reasoning behind those points. (An example - it mentions enacting mandates to improve diversity as a couple states have done, but doesn't explain what those mandates are, or how they help.)

This is an informative essay and opinion piece from an expert, the writer who is an attorney at NYU School of Law. She is exposing a disparity -- a serious problem in our legal system. You ask if this is journalism? It is an essay written in first person from a credible source. The author exposes her research and experience, which can not be defined as journalism or reporting because of the nature of the genre: a personal essay. It’s not journalism because we don’t see the ... More »

The journalism aspect leaves something to be desired. One question I walked away with is how the diversity initiatives will be handled in the future. Secondly, if the suggestion is true that minority underestimate their potential in becoming a judge, there’s a totally different problem at hand. The article does however give a compelling depiction of the legal system regarding the lack of diversity.

This is an issue that I'm sure many people are aware of but the author gives a more deeper insight on the matter which is very useful to its readers. Although the writer is an attorney she was able to write the article in clearer terms that helps the everyday reader understand better. I noticed just a couple grammatical errors that took away from the reading but other than that good information and great, positive tone.
