Race and the stimulus rejectionists

I admit it: I'm still enjoying all of President Obama's firsts, and watching our first black president make his first State of the Union address (even if it's the traditional first-year faux-SOTU) is exciting, no matter how dire the state of our union remains. Still, as Gary Kamiya notes today, it's remarkable how Republicans continue to put a racial spin on debates over who "deserves" government help, even with an African-American in the White House. the writer makes a very interesting and apropos case about the governors who reject stimulus funding, either in theory or practice, as being related to the historic racial bias now effecting differences in black/white population/unemployment in those states. she doesn't discuss the states' past histories of race relationship, but it's clearly implied in those facts . i'd have wanted more information on comparing other states, and on any differences in unemployment stats in those states occurring in the last couple years.

Ms. Walsh is on the money concerning the southern agenda. With Jindal and Sanford talking smack about not taking the money, if they don't they will be tared and feathered and run out of town. Barbour's state has three times as many minorities as whites unemployed as do the others. Putting race and republicans in the same sentence is sickening.

While these states are traditionally red, if they don't take ever dollar given to them, I can see blue in the future.

Insightful and original. Well sourced. This opinion piece makes some strong connections between unemployment statistics of African Americans and the refusal of a few U.S. governors to accept aspects of President Obama's stimulus package.
