Immigration Fight Simmered During Stimulus Negotiations

Immigration Groups Fought Over House Amendment to Require Employers Verify Worker Status

Among the many provisions of the $800–plus billion stimulus bill that were hotly debated and horse-traded behind closed doors, one that remained largely under the radar through the negotiations would have forced employers receiving stimulus money to use a controversial federal computer system to verify that all of its employees are legal U.S. workers. Although preliminary indications are that the requirement did not make it into the final version, the ... Full Story »

A very well reported story on a largely unnoticed but controversial provision under debate to be included in the stimulus bill. The Independent shows that the fight over whether to compel employers receiving stimulus money to use E-Verify was real, and went beyond the halls of the Capitol. Good sourcing in this story, and although the tone of this story seems to lean against the E-Verify system, I call it fair.

If E-Verify is the only thing that the conservatives can come up with, this country's in bad shape. To try and process 7.4 million immigrants with this type of computerized wizardly is ridiculous.

Just training the people to use this should bring in 3 million jobs.

A well presented story on an important topic. Lots of background information, quotes and opinions from all sides. IT would have been more balanced with a Legal opinion based on existing law and Federal laws in effect for employers. The Actual Law seems to have been skirted with more focus on the critical view of the E-Verify Program.

Illegal Aliens DO not have the rights of Citizens on most levels and should be deported upon discovery here. E-Verify should be required FOR all ... More »
