Senate Dems Compromise Away Best Parts of Recovery Plan

Senate Democrats on Friday bartered away key elements of the more robust plan approved by the House.

In order to get the votes of two Republican (Maine's Susan Collins and Pennsylvania's Arlen Specter) and perhaps another (Mainer Olympia Snowe) that were needed to undermine the threat of a GOP filibuster, Reid surrendered $86 billion is proposed stimulus spending. This article claims since the Senate bipartisan stimulus agreement cut some spending it is a poorer bill. To be a stimulus spending must be spent soon. This bill is not for items that seem important. It must be spent in weeks and months. Most of the author’s list does not fit this requirement.

Nichols itemizes the gashes made in the Senate bill and identifies the ideological changes made against the best advice of economists in order to gather a couple Republican votes. Funds cut for public transportation and energy efficiency seem especially ill considered to the extent the funds also help address global warming problems.

Mr. Nichols says what a lot of Americans are saying. If you give away programs that are intended to help the poor and middle class, then let the conservatives have more and more tax cuts for the wealthy,cut Head Start, stop the building for new schools, your just doing what Bush did for eight years.

Lets hope the Dems can get some of these programs put back in before it's sent to the President.
