Michelle Obama's first outside White House function: Visits Arne Duncan at the Education Department

REMARKS BY THE FIRST LADY TO DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION STAFF

First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to a crowd of about 350 people at the Department of Education--part of her "get to know D.C" tour--praising them for their decades of service.

Aides say she will visit other federal cabinet level agencies in the coming weeks.

The fact that Michelle Obama chose to visit the Education Department as her first visit on a tour of federal agencies seems to say a lot about the Obama Administration's priorities. In fact, the gesture itself may actually overpower the speech.

This is a refreshing change. The first lady visiting a federal agency headquarters to encourage and thank staff. That is an important and positive development
