Why The Stimulus Plan Isn't

I have such conflicting thoughts on the stimulus plan I have no idea how to characterize them. The Republicans are so right, and completely wrong. The Democrats are feckless as usual. President Obama comes out by far the best, but is being disingenuous in his marketing and is thus open to very valid criticisms. I really hope he changes his pitch or otherwise a very good program may be derailed (or at least judged a failure) because it doesn’t meet its aims. Full Story »

a critique of the current stimulus plan on both democratic and republican arguments around it. the implication is that no one really knows what it will or won't accomplish. the writer point sout that the long-term projects of the plan have the most hope of helping the economy over time. the need for the pres. to reframe the recovery seems like a good idea.

i agree with the writer's views on obama's vulnerabilty as time goes by and the recovery doesn't necessarily yet appear to be working and worry about his political ability to bring it to conclusion if that happens. i recommend the new yorker article on the stimulus as companion to this.

Not a particularly strong piece, written too casually to have an impact on most readers, but some of the insights are original and linking is decent.

How many economies in the world do you know that can find twice the water, twice the wood and minerals, twice the energy and produce twice the garbage and pollution and still have any quality of life left. ...
