Getting There from Here: How should Obama reform health care?

In every industrialized nation, the movement to reform health care has begun with stories about cruelty. The Canadians had stories like the 1946 Toronto Globe and Mail report of a woman in labor who was refused help by three successive physicians, apparently because of her inability to pay. In Australia, a 1954 letter published in the Sydney Morning Herald sought help for a young woman who had lung disease. She couldn’t afford to refill her oxygen tank, ... Full Story »

Basically sound analysis of the problems and possibilities for fixing our system of health care coverage, though there is no mention of the system of health care delivery. When I found that a physician wrote the article, I was not surprised to find that the physician is a specialist. There is no mention whatsoever of the problem that many, many people in Massachusetts are still having in finding a primary care physician, since our system is overloaded with specialists and lacking ... This is an original, well thought out and apparently well researched opinion piece promoting the concept of reforming the US health care system through evolution rather than revolution. One shortcoming from a journalistic prospective is the citing of statistics to make a point but not citing the source.

Wow! Comprehensive, well-reasoned, and well argued. The writer supports his view from a wide range of experts in various fields, and a historical perspective from many countries. I was completely blown away when I reached the end and discovered the author was a doctor. And even more astonished when I discovered I'd read all 5 pages--something I rarely do online. A really great piece!

Surely one of the finest analyses I have read regarding the problems associated with reforming our U.S. healthcare system. Atul Gawande's point--that in reforming our system we should build on what we have--is forcibly argued and makes perfect sense. My only reservation is that we might profit from the French experience (their healthcare system is widely acknowledged to be the best in the world), so it might be wise slowly to steer our healthcare behomoth in the French direction. ... This oodles of examples of how successful government-run health care overseas is.

A very well researched report on the quality of heath care in the U.S. and around the world. While we pay more than any other country, we are 35th in the world, which is sickening. Now whose fault is that. Look no further than Washington D.C. The Drug companies wright the prescription laws, while the HMO's do the rest. With a Democratic President, congress, and Senate, things better change or it will be time to throw the new Bums out.

A completely one sided puff piece for socialized medicine.
