In Gaza, Weighing Crimes and Ethics in Urban Warfare

Whatever the military and political results of Israel’s 21-day war against Hamas in Gaza, Israel is again facing serious accusations and anguished questioning over the legality of its military conduct. As in Israel’s 2006 war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, the popular perception abroad of how Israel fights, and hence of Israelis, may prove to be more lasting than any strategic gains or losses. A tremendous journalistic effort by one of the best reporters covering the Middle East. Full of nuance, Erlanger's piece gets past the simplistic slogans that detract from our understanding of Israel's response to Hamas' campaign of terrorism.

Outstanding report on serious accusations facing Israel for its alleged war crimes, which have created an uproar in the Arab world and the West. The article provides extensive factual evidence to document the disproportionate use of force against unarmed civilians by the Israeli military, whose conduct is largely condemned by human right groups and independent observers from around the world.

As an American citizen, I am deeply disturbed by -- and ashamed of -- the Bush Administration's inability to stop Israel's despicable tactics. We ... More »

This is a hard story to rate. It is in-depth, and takes on the issue with the gravity it is due. As with a lot of Times coverage of this issue, however, the piece gets lost in moral hedging, in constantly needing to reiterate "But Hamas is bad too". The piece deals with the differences in death tolls from the pages of the military, not considering breadth of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza. Nevertheless, I give the piece very high points for enterprise. This is a tricky topic, and ... More »

While providing more detail and more balance than is typical of the coverage of the situation in Gaza, this story still tends to blame Gaza/Hamas for problems originating with the forced eviction of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their lands that became Israel and continuing with the failure to recognize a legally-elected government, continued seizure of lands, and the humanitarian crisis caused by blockade of Gaza.

This crisis will not end until the U.S. stops its military support of Israel. www.ifAmericansknew.org

A thorough look at some horrific results of Israel's war on Gaza, how these events happened and what (if anything) is being done to stop them. Extremely relevant and in-depth article; outstanding reporting and interviewing has elicited some very candid answers from major stakeholders. A thoughtful look at what the "rules of war" actually means during this particular conflict.

An excellent report where you consume volumes and learn nothing. Sen. John McCain talk's about the fog of war. Both sides will have their expert talking head's and we will still Know only one thing. Woman and Children were murdered, and who know's how many were maimed. This is nothing but a sad ending to a sad story.

I would like to know about the white phospherous that was used, or not used. If it was used on innocent civilians, THAT'S A WAR CRIME!

The article uses a point counterpoint style that creates balance in the reporting. Relaying on attributed and unattributed sources, conveying the complexities of both the situation at hand and the responses to it, this story is complete and sophisticated.
