Official resigns over Afghan war

A former Marine Corps captain with combat experience in Iraq, Hoh had also served in uniform at the Pentagon, and as a civilian in Iraq and at the State Department. By July, he was the senior U.S. civilian in Zabul province, a Taliban hotbed. But last Full Story »

A controversial story, one I have trouble rating. DeYoung absolutely could have written this more carefully. I'm surprised at how many seemingly unchecked quotes the Post allowed Hoh, and I question how much of his back story is relevant to his resignation. Nevertheless, an important piece with plenty of information about its key figure.

I believe strongly that the United States should withdraw troops from Afghanistan.

With “multiple, seemingly infinite, local groups,” he wrote, the insurgency “is fed by what is perceived by the Pashtun people as a continued and ... More »

Informative article about former Marine Matthew Hoh, who resigned from the Foreign Service to protest the war in Afghanistan. This report provides good information about his background and career, including comments from U.S. officials involved in this incident (though none of his previous employers, colleagues or family members are cited in this profile). A few more independent sources and perspectives would be helpful to provide more context about Hoh and the circumstances that ... More »

If the United States is to remain in Afghanistan, Hoh said, he would advise a reduction in combat forces. He also would suggest providing more support for Pakistan, better ... More »

This is an example of superb journalism. The story presents the facts of the matter, complete with a link (online version) to the actual resignation letter, which is well worth reading, and puts those facts in context with a very compelling account of the experiences that shaped the military life and attitudes of Capt. Hoh. Hoh is presented here as a sincere, thoughtful, brave and resourceful soldier and employee of the Foreign Service. The content of his letter supports what the ... More »

DeYoung gives us a well written article about Hoh's experience, his reputation, and his views on Afghanistan. For multiple sourcing, many other people have similar view in other articles.

The Taliban government offered to turn al Qaeda over to an international court. Bush refused, and chose to bomb and invade. Now the big military ... More »

This is a well written story describing Matthew Hoh, his background, his experiences, his observations regarding rural Afghanistan and the reasons that he provides for resigning. While there are short statements of praise from those that disagree with Hoh's assessment, the focus is on Hoh, not analysis of his views. Viewed in that light, is is a very good story.

Outstanding, thoughtful account of a dramatically important action by a courageous former Marine who has resigned from the US Foreign Service because of his disillusionment with US policy in Afghanistan. Extensive quotes from Matthew Hoh, other diplomatic and military officers give a fully-formed portrait of one man's careful analysis and evaluation of the situation in Afghanistan. A "Must Read" for anyone who wants to understand what is happening and why.

What greater credibility can anyone have to evaluate the perilous and ill-advised continuation of US occupation in Afghanistan? Matthew Hoh is an ... More »

This is a chilling account of what the Obama administration is up against in Afghanistan. It's especially credible because of Hoh's impressive military experience and carefully considered reasons for resigning. In crisp senttences, the writer draws together all the salient information about how seriously Hoh's action has been taken by the administration.

An informative article that conveys both the character and experience of Matthew Hoh and the situation on the ground in Afghanistan. What the article does not provide is adequate context: Why did the United States, after 9/11, decide that invading Afghanistan and deposing the Taliban was so essential? And, if it was so essential eight years ago, why is leaving now a viable option?

Unlike most Americans I was not convinced that our invasion of Afghanistan in the wake of 9/11 was a good idea. There is no question that we needed ... More »

This is a reasonablely well done article. One point missed is the difference from those who are in the trench and and the higher officers who know that they may loose troops but can stiil win.

This thoughtful and revealing article tells the story of U.S. official Matt Hoh, and it presents his assessment of the war in Afghanistan. As an insider's account, the article offers a sincere and quite important contribution to the current debate about Afghanistan.
